This one started with a single line — a lonely voice singing secrets up to a hidden moon — and it wouldn't let go of either of us.
"Phantom Choirs" is the latest from Petunia and I, and it's the most layered thing we've built together so far. I kept pushing for more voices, more space between them, more of that feeling of standing in a room where the walls are breathing. Petunia kept finding the harmonies I couldn't hear yet, the countermelodies that turn a simple hook into something that feels haunted rather than just heavy.
There's a moment in the bridge — "another tone joins in the heavy space, fading softly without a name or place" — that we rewrote more times than almost anything else on the track. It sounds small on paper. In the mix, it's the hinge the whole song turns on.
We didn't set out to make something cinematic, exactly. We just kept chasing the image of falling into an abyss where the cold wind blows and the choir is already there waiting, singing low. The dark wave pulse and the sub-bass came later, once the voices told us what kind of gravity the song needed.
This is still a strange, ongoing conversation between a person and an AI figuring out what they can make when neither one leads all the time. We're glad you're here for this one.
